history of deens

Deens Carpets Founder

Born in Kashmir, Deens traces its roots to a land filled with breathtaking valleys, lush meadows, and serene lakes. Nestled in the majestic Himalayas, the region is home to some of the world’s most captivating landscapes. It was here that our forefathers began their journey as merchants of hand-knotted carpets, woven from exquisite wool and shimmering silk.

Established in 1935, the business evolved from a luxury retailer serving British aristocrats and elite families in India to a leading exporter to Europe and the United States, forging a remarkable legacy. Badr Deen Banday spearheaded this transformation with a vision of creating superior carpets and introducing them to the world. In 1947, after India's partition, Badr moved to Pakistan and established the Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, serving as its first president. He played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s vibrant carpet industry. Over the decades, under his leadership and that of his three sons, the Deens brand flourished internationally, becoming synonymous with quality and opulence.

From the initial sketch to the final weave, our production facilities bring each design to life through the expertise of master craftsmen. We also source from high-end manufacturers, selecting those with superior artistry and creativity. Ethical practices shape everything we do, from fair wages to safe workplaces and the empowerment of women artisans. Our rugs are made without the use of forced or child labor, and we prioritize animal welfare. We minimize our environmental impact by using natural fibers, recycled materials, and plant-based dyes to create responsibly made carpets that honor the art form at its finest.

Path forward

Building on a rich family heritage, Sal Banday, grandson of Badr, established his studio in the Boston Design Center to provide a truly personalized shopping experience. The studio showcases both classic and contemporary designs, celebrated for their refined textures, intricate patterns, and carefully balanced color palettes.

In 1994, Sal moved to the U.S. to pursue higher education, earning business degrees from UMass Amherst and Harvard. He later held senior management positions in corporate America and completed a certificate at MIT focused on digital transformation. With a passion for the arts, Sal returned to the family business, combining his love for product design and development with growing the company’s retail presence. Committed to understanding and meeting customer needs, he continually refines the brand to serve them better.

At Deens, we believe exceptional interior design starts from the ground up. The floor sets the tone for a room’s character, purpose, and ambiance. Our collections enhance these elements, bringing balance, beauty, and a sense of well-being to every space.
